How to prepare for a natural park visit

Natural parks and reserves are amazing places where you can have deep encounters with nature and wildlife. This post provides useful tips on how to prepare for a natural park visit.

This story and pictures are contributed by Francisco J Erize, Argentine naturalist, wildlife photographer and conservationist

August morning, 1969, Nairobi National Park, Kenya. For a good while I have been driving my small rented car along one of the less trodden trails when I got to the junction with one of the major ones. A tourist anxiously inquires: “Have you seen anything interesting?” The question gives me an opportunity to express my enthusiasm: “Yes I came across a good herd of Eland antelopes, a group of three splendid males of Grant Gazelle and…” I was cut short by a “Well… I guess we are only interested in lions; have you seen any lions?” Saddened, I realize how much they must be loosing out in their safari.

Portugal’s best kept secret: Ericeira

The first time I had a trip to Portugal in 2014. It covered top cities such as Lisbon and Porto, as well as nearby sightseeing locations like Sintra and Cascais. But there were a number of pure magic moments and unexpected discoveries. For example, occasionally, I found myself walking Camino de Santiago. It was my way to a farm stay. I thought, why they put these strange “Shell logos” in places inappropriate for the oil company. Thanks to true pilgrims (not occasional, like me) I realized that it was actually Camino, OMG!

This post, however, is not about the top travel choices in Portugal, but about my favorite small city called Ericeira, an authentic place for fishermen and surfers, locals and strangers.

Antarctic expedition: leaders grown on the edge of the world

Physical presence at certain geographical locations often helps us to see real things and be surprised, stay humble and receptive. In 2007, 12 years ago, I had a chance to join the Antarctic expedition with Robert Swan, OBE. It was a business trip and leadership training for international teams from different corporations, media, and NGOs. I guess that many people would like to have a training like that. But some people were still skeptical. Why should you go so far to get insight? What’s there, in Antarctica, that you don’t have at your beautiful office?

Exploring massage to stay vital during travel

What kind of special skills a frequent traveler might need? You may think of travel logistics first, and you’re right: finding great new places to go, or booking cheap tickets well in advance is important. But there are some not obvious things that make the experience even better. For example, staying vital state during a trip is a mandatory skill, too. Over the years, I’ve been exploring massage – a powerful way to relax and regain energy.

Travel can drain a lot of energy, especially if you change time zones, seasons, your usual food and environment. As a result, you might face a discouraging problem: you have breathtaking views to contemplate and great new people to meet, but you find yourself in a state where you cannot actually enjoy it. There are some tips and tricks on how you can do it better and keep yourself in a good shape (keep you posted). But I want to pick one thing to start.

Look for the right travel experiences

Travel is a litmus test and a catalyst of our lives. When we travel, we learn a lot about the world and about ourselves. On a very basic level, the right travel experiences remind us who we are and what we like and don’t like. They charge us with new emotions and energy. The right travel experiences can also amplify our values, remind us what is really important in life, and force to re-calibrate our priorities.

In addition to being a life barometer or a litmus test, travel can provide rich learning opportunities. For example, during a trip, you can master a new language, learn about a new culture, work in a different country, and live like a local. These types of experiences generate new emotions and new human connections. Being away, in a different environment, gives us freedom and courage to calibrate inner definition of who we are, stretch, redefine and reinvent ourselves.
